What Is ISO 22000?
ISO 22000 is an international food safety management system standard designed for all organisations in the food chain. Published in 2005 and revised in 2018, this standard combines HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) principles with ISO's management system framework.
Packaging and filling equipment are critical contact points on a food production line. For this reason, ISO 22000 certification covers not only raw materials and recipes, but also machine and equipment design.
Packaging Compliance: Which Regulations Apply?
European Union
- EC 1935/2004: Framework regulation for materials in contact with food
- EU 10/2011: Specific migration limits for plastic materials (Overall Migration Limit: 10 mg/dm²)
- EC 2023/2006: Good Manufacturing Practice for contact materials
Turkey
- Turkish Food Codex: "Regulation on Materials and Articles in Contact with Food" (2013)
- TSE standards: Turkish adaptations of relevant EN standards
USA
- FDA 21 CFR Part 177: Polymeric materials in contact with food
- FDA 21 CFR Part 174: Permitted indirect food additives
Critical Control Points (CCP): Packaging Line Perspective
Under ISO 22000 and HACCP, the key CCPs on packaging lines are:
CCP-1: Contamination Prevention
- Allergen contamination check at packaging material intake
- Inline metal detector or X-ray system for metallic foreign body detection
- Separate detection limits for glass, plastic and metal (typical: Fe ≤1.5 mm / Non-Fe ≤2.0 mm / SS ≤2.0 mm)
CCP-2: Hermetic Seal Integrity
- Heat seal temperature and pressure monitoring (per batch)
- Inline leak test (vacuum or pressure method)
- Automatic reject system when seal integrity fails
CCP-3: Weight and Volume Accuracy
- Minimum fill quantity is a legal requirement (Pre-Packaged Products Directive — 2009/34/EC)
- Continuous monitoring via Statistical Process Control (SPC)
- T1 and T2 error limits: Average weight below nominal value is not acceptable
Hygienic Criteria in Machine Design
Machines used on an ISO 22000-compliant food line must have the following properties:
| Criterion | Standard Requirement |
|---|---|
| Construction material | 304 or 316L stainless steel |
| Surface roughness | Ra ≤0.8 µm (food contact surfaces) |
| Lubricants | NSF H1 (food-grade) approved |
| Electrical protection | Min. IP65 (wet cleaning compatible) |
| CIP design | EHEDG or 3-A Sanitary Standards |
Packaging Material Selection: Sustainability and Compliance
New requirements under the EU 2030 Plastics Package are coming into force for food packaging:
- Recyclability: All plastic packaging must be recyclable from 2025
- Recycled content: Min. 30% recycled material in PET bottles by 2030
- Single-use plastics: Products banned under the SUP Directive
At Dr Mach Technology we offer filling and sealing solutions compatible with mono-material (single-layer, recyclable) packaging.
